Can I move my toilet, shower or basin to a new position?
In many bathrooms, products can be moved. The better question is whether they can be moved neatly, safely and without creating future problems.
The toilet is usually the biggest question
A toilet needs a large waste connection into the soil pipe. If the new position is close to the existing soil route, it may be straightforward. If it needs to cross the room, go through joists or run uphill, it becomes much harder.
Boxing can hide pipework, but too much boxing can make a bathroom feel smaller and less tidy.
Showers, baths and basins
Water feeds are often easier to reroute than waste pipes. The waste still needs a sensible fall so water drains away properly.
Low shower trays and wet rooms need especially careful planning because there is less space below the floor for drainage.
What to check before deciding
The fitter needs to understand where the existing pipes run, what is below the bathroom, where the soil stack is, and whether the floor can safely take any changes.
Sometimes a small layout tweak gives the same practical benefit as a full move, without the cost or disruption.
Good layout questions
- Where is the soil pipe now?
- Will new pipework need boxing in?
- Can the waste pipe keep a proper fall?
- Will the new position leave enough room to use the toilet, basin and shower comfortably?
- Will future access be possible if anything needs maintenance?
